Skateboarding which is one of the leading sports worldwide has its origin from California, United States probably in the year 1960s.  These Skateboarders use skating boards to slide over the streets. In 1964 Surfer Publication, California published Skateboarder magazine. During 1965 international championship award were distributed.  This championship award provided more popularity to this sport.

As a continuous of these awards many production companies started producing Skateboard wheels using fiberglass, aluminum and plywood. The most popular of these is plywood, which is considered to be more comfortable by the sportsmen. In the earlier days, this skating was performed in streets. Nowadays, it is performed in ice covered mountain cliffs and skate parks. This type of skating was started as a hobby but now it is grown up to international sport.

The players have their own Skateboarding logo, which recognizes them in person. These logos are colorful and are in different sizes. Variety of themes is also available. Some skateboarding logos are modern, trendy and even some are comical.

Some of Skateboarding logos are ‘A Team Skate Picture Logo’ – which is worded as A CHAIN IS ONLY AS STRONG AS ITS WEAKEST LINK. The Second one is that ‘Alien Workshop Green and Orange Logo’. And the third kind of Skating board logo is that ‘Classic Independent Skate Logo’.  ‘Flip Wishing Lamp Skate Logo’ is the fourth kind and the other kind is that ‘Real Skateboards Logo’. These logos help to identify the sportsmen during the game. They also depicts the mood, character of the skateboarder apart from describing his personality.  Varieties of logos are also available for women, men and children. Usually they are registered or trademarked. One can’t use other company’s logo. Among all other company’s logo Santa Cruz Logo is a most popular one. Logo plays an important part in Skateboarding.

The fact that skateboards exist does not necessarily mean that there were invented by someone.  They are one of those phenomena that just seem to have evolved.  It is thought that the idea became popular in the 1950’s.  Originally called sidewalk surfers, they were a hit with the surf community on the west coast.  Although it is not known who invented skateboards there are some interesting facts about them that we can pin down to individuals.

We know that skateboards were first sold commercially in 1958 by Bill and Mark Richards.  These were pretty basic boards made by fixing roller skate wheels to pieces of wood – there is little that can be changed about this basic construction!  This was, not surprisingly, in California, the home of the surfers.  Although this is not who invented skateboards, they were probably the first retailers.  The fact that skateboards were made popular by the surf community, possible for use when there were no waves and they had nothing to do, is reflected in the shape that the boards are constructed.  They are always surfboard shaped, particularly some of the smaller plastic ones that were so popular in the 1960s and 70s.

One other fact that we know is who invented skateboard kicktails.  This was Richard Stevenson and he patented the design in 1969.  This was as an improvement to the basic design of the boards to help perform tricks by lifting up the front end. This has become an essential part of the modern skateboard.

Another design element that was patented was much more recent.  In 1993 a patent was issued for the platform steerable skateboard.  This was to a Thomas Welsh.  Once again, this is not who invented skateboards, but definitely someone who was instrumental in their evolution. 

The basic design of the skateboard does not seem to have one particular, definitive inventor.  They were originally just a plank of 4 x 2 on a roller skate.  This was probably a roller skate belonging to your sister and, as you can make two skateboards out of her roller skates, it no doubt bought you a friend as well.  The chances are that skateboarders of that day were always seen in pairs!  As we know, necessity is the mother of invention and perhaps it was someone who could not find both their roller skates who invented skateboards. I do not think that we will ever find an answer.

 There are probably many people out there who would claim to know who invented skateboards, and maybe even some who would claim the crown themselves.  I actually remember my father telling me a long time ago that he used to fasten his school books to a roller skate with his belt, sit on it and career down the hill to school.  This would have been in the 1940s in England!  Perhaps he deserves the crown! 

A skateboard trick basically requires lots of practice to get a hold of the right technique. The skateboard must be snapped down as you make the front foot slide down and jump, but ones you attain mastery over it you can learn other common skateboard tricks easily.

One needs to buy good skate shoes, as skating with regular shoes will be harder and even dangerous. The large flat bottoms of the skate shoes gives better grip on the board. A helmet is also important while skating. And of course, wearing protective pads will protect you from injury.

Here are a few basic skills you’ll want to master:

360 Ollie – one must pop up the board high and spin around and land in the same way it started. 360 is performed at ramps and high curbs as it needs hang time in plenty to spin around.

Ollie 180 – pop up into the air and spin at 180 degrees and then land. Before one begins to ride on the skateboard one must know how to turn, stop and be comfortable and confident. You also need to balance well, without this you will not be able to land.

New skaters always face the problem of low Ollies, and it could be very frustrating when you are unable to get the right Ollies. Low Ollies are due to not picking up the feet high enough. One also needs to center the shoulder properly and relax. The back foot needs to be snapped in the air and the knees slammed close to ones chest.

If you continue to have problems try pulling up your feet without bothering about the front foot. Keep trying.

Power sliding a skate board is the fastest and the coolest technique of stopping a skateboard. Many find it difficult to powerslide a skateboard, but it is valuable to learn. The art of stopping immediately will help you to stop when you see traffic, prevent you from colliding with someone, and it will help you to stop in style.

Bert slide – here the skater bends down low, places the hand on the floor and lets the feet and the board slide at 180 degrees. Bert slide looks very stylish and smooth. It is a very smooth trick that anyone can easily learn. One need not know to Ollie to learn Bert slide.

Kickturns – it is all about balancing the rear wheel and swinging the front to a new track

Footbreaking – it is a great way to halt incase you are moving fast. It prevents crashing and burning.

Every sport has a history that you should be aware of before you decide to try it. Extreme sports are no exception – skateboard history is a field that has garnered quite a bit of interest.

All the different skaters who have invented moves, the different venues where these moves have been invented, the skaters who gave everything up for the sport are all part of skateboard history.

Skateboarding began with surfing. Surfing on the waves was not enough for these stalwarts, and so they decided to surf on the sidewalks, too, and so, a new sport was born.

In 1920’s, the first kind of skateboard to be sold was a contraption that was meant to mimic cross-country skiing, more than anything else. This was the predecessor of the three-wheeled scooter skate of the next decade.

The next thing that marked skateboard history was a four-wheeled skateboard, called the skeeter skate. This had removable handles, and was fairly close to the skateboard we know of now.

The first time in skateboard history that rollerskate trucks were combined with a wooden plank, to make something similar to the skateboards of today, was in 1947. This was done by Peter Parken, a surfer in San Diego.

It was in the 1950’s that a form of skateboarding as we know it today made an appearance, and surfers embraced it wholeheartedly. Around this time, children started making their own skateboards, with planks of wood and rollertrucks.

In the sixties, skateboard history moved a step further when skateboards were manufactured commercially on a fairly large scale. The skateboards available then included the three-wheelers, as well.

It was only in 1963 that the first professional skateboards were manufactured, They were manufactured by Larry Stevenson and his wife. Skateboarding, though, was still influenced a lot by surfing. The techniques involved, the styles, even the fashion were all inspired by surfing. In fact, these skateboards were names Makaha Phil Edwards, after a legendary surfer. The first skateboard competition was also held at this time.
It was around 1965 that skateboarding began to come off the sidewalks and become a bit more extreme, because skater started experimenting in swimming pools. Skateboarding, like any other extreme sport, was seen as unsafe, but documentaries and movies were made to change this concept.

By 1975, safety gear was developed, and this made the world accept skateboarding a little more easily.
It was in the seventies that skateboarding as we know today really took flight. This was an epoch marking decade in skateboard history. From then till now, there have been many champions who have laid their bodies and souls on the line for their passion – skateboards.

The 360 Flip

If you’ve followed the first of the skateboard trick tips and have learned how to do an Ollie, this trick will go more smoothly. This one is really cool, and looks impressive when you do it in front of your friends.

When you slam your back foot on the board just like when you do an Ollie, hit it extra hard in order to try and flip it.

While you’re doing this, allow your front foot to slide off the board and use your toes to flip it that way as well.

Be careful while you’re doing this trick, because it’s easy to get jumbled up and fall. After you’ve managed the flip, you want to catch the board with your feet and center it again.

Don’t forget to bend your knees no matter which of the skateboard trick tips you’re doing.

With all tricks, it will help you absorb the shock of the landing so you won’t be injured. You can try and learn these tricks on a stationary board, as it may be easier.

Just place your board on grass or some other textured surface to keep it from moving. Once you’ve learned to do these tricks on a board that’s not moving, you should practice them with the board rolling.

Many children have a love for skateboarding. They watch some of their favorite professionals do tricks and dangerous moves on television and want to do them also. However, the people on television are highly trained and well protected. Children need to be aware of the risks associated with skateboarding and how to minimize those risks by being safe. Children should be told before they start skateboarding that this is a fun but dangerous sport and they should always be aware of the dangers when trying to do anything on a skateboard. Additionally, before the child goes out, children should be sure they have on all protective equipment and that they are supervised by an adult or they are in contact with an adult at all times in case of emergency.

The skateboard itself should be considered before purchasing. There are different types of boards for different forms and levels of skate boarder. Choosing the proper skateboard and ensuring it is age appropriate is very important. Protective gear is very important when skateboarding. Shoes should be closed toe and provide flexibility and a grip that is important. A helmet should also be used all the time when skateboarding. Head injuries are very common and most severe head trauma can be eliminated with the use of proper head gear. There are specialty shorts and shirts that are made for skateboarders that include padding which will help reduce cuts, scrapes and possibly broken bones in case of a fall. At the very minimum, the child should be wearing protective elbow and knee pads at all times.

When skateboarding, it is inevitable that the skateboarder will eventually fall. This may occur as one is learning how to skateboard or when trying tricks and more complicated maneuvers. Learning how to fall properly will help reduce injury. Lowering the body and rolling is the best way to fall. If completely upright, the impact will be harder and there will be more of a chance of injury. Trying to relax is difficult but a relaxed body is less prone to breaks than a rigid one. The skateboarder should also be aware of others who are around and should be aware of their environment. A skate board park or back yard is the safest environment for skateboarders. It is not advisable to allow children to skateboard on the street because passing cars pose an increased risk. Ensuring children know how to protect themselves and that they know all safety rules will minimize the injury risks associated with skateboarding.

Now that you have graduated from your skateboarding school of hard knocks and you are ready to compete against any one who can skateboard, there are a few rules to follow. Many people do not consider skateboarding a legitimate sport. Many people associate skateboarding with teenage thugs who use skateboarding as a cover-up to smoke cigarettes. Actually, many skateboarders do the exact opposite. Many people have developed skateboarding ministries to attract young people to keep them from taking drugs or engaging themselves in premarital relationships.

In order for skateboarders to gain the respect of people and capture young people’s attention on a positive note, there a few rules that must be followed.

- Do not skateboard in a mall parking lot where there are shoppers and parked cars in the midst. A person who is skateboarding is setting themselves up to receive negative stares, rolling eyes and murmurs. The best thing for a skateboarder to do is select a vacant part of the shopping mall parking lot to skateboard.

- If you live in a town or city (especially in a heavy populated area) where there are side walks…that’s considered a bad location. If you are trying to skateboard around people as they walk back and forth during rush hour morning or evening, you will receive angry stares and to top it off, you might even get reprimanded or even yelled at. Remember, do not skateboard in high-traffic areas or where there are a lot of people, especially when people are rushing to go to and from school or the office.

- One pet peeve of many people are skateboarders who take public transportation such as a train while carrying their skateboard under their arms without a cover. Before traveling with your skateboard, make sure that you purchase an attractive skateboard cover. You are not only covering your skateboard so that railway passengers do not give you funny looks, you are protecting your skateboard from harmful elements such as rain, sleet, snow and etc.

- Do not assume that a vacant piece of property is abandoned or is not owned by anyone. Do not skateboard on residential or commercial private property. That’s considered trespassing.

- While skateboarding do not suddenly whip out your cell phone to call a friend or answer an incoming call. Your eyes must be focused on what’s ahead of you. Staring at an incoming caller can cause a skateboard to run into a sign, a pedestrian or even worst, on going traffic. If you need to answer a phone or make a phone call or make a cell phone call either stop and wait on the side where it is safest or purchase a hand-held free cell phone so that you can answer a call right away.

One way to impress people who may not be too keen on skateboarders, purchase the latest in skateboard gear.

Step three: Trying step 2 over and over again will help you learn it a lot faster. If you fail at the beginning, try it again because with pure determination and perseverance you will eventually learn to master the trick. If you are not getting close to step two, it may be that you must practice a more basic trick. Please don’t skate beyond your ability because we are all not the same and every one doesn’t progress at the same speed.

Please abide by these steps and remember that skate boarding is supposed to be fun. The truth is, you don’t have to burn yourself out by getting overly frustrated. Learn a few tricks at a time and not too many tricks at once. To be a great skate boarder, just skate, have fun, and remember that tricks are not always instant.

Some of the most exciting things to watch in a sporting event are the tricks that professional skateboarders do. While not everyone can be at that advanced level, there are many tricks the amateur intermediate and advanced skateboarders can learn that will, if nothing else, it impresses their friends. Perhaps they can continue on to learn more and become professional or semi-pro and compete for prizes and money. Learning the tricks can be fun but it is especially important to know and understand that trick riding can be very dangerous and is highly prone to injury. More people get hurt in skateboarding accidents when attempting tricks than with any other form of skateboarding.

There are several forms of tricks that can be learned. Some of them are harder than others so it is best to start off with the easy ones before advancing to the more complicated ones. This also gives the persona sense of accomplishment and will give them confidence to be able to attempt the harder tricks. One of the easiest tricks to learn is a simple jump. This is simply a position change on the board that requires some dexterity and balance. While skating, jump and make a half turn so that you are now faced the other direction on the board. Once this is mastered, you can try for a complete turn.

Another easy trick to learn is how to walk the skateboard. This is done by zig zagging the back and front wheels so the top wheels pop up and are placed at a forty five degree angle when landing. Then the back wheels are popped up to meet the front. The skateboard continues to walk continuously. This is a flashy maneuver that is easy to accomplish and not terribly dangerous. It takes a little practice and balance, though, to make it look smooth.

A full turn is a bit more difficult but with some practice and a good balance it can be accomplished without too much trouble. The front wheels are popped up while pivoting a half turn on the back wheels before the front wheels land. This can be advanced to a complete turn once this is mastered. After some basic turns and holds are learned, the skater can start doing some of the more advanced tricks that involve ramps and rails. These tricks are much more dangerous are done at a faster pace so it is important to be confident in the skateboarding basics before attempting.

So, you want to be able to do tricks with your board like the pros, huh? Most pros train for years before they can catch all that air.However, Practice makes perfect, and once you get this trick down, your friends will flip out and be so jealous.

The Ollie

The Ollie is the absolute most used skateboard tricks, and a lot of other tricks are based on this one.

Most Skateboard trick tips will tell you how to do it, but they don’t include the tips that make it easier.

You should be on your board with your back foot on the tail of the board.

Your front foot should be in the middle of the skateboard, and you should have your knees slightly bent.

Don’t ride very fast while you’re learning to Ollie. You don’t want to eat dirt before you learn this cool trick.

Now, here is one of the best skateboard trick tips when you’re learning to Ollie.

As you’re riding, the lower you bend, the more air you will get. In fact, your hands shouldn’t be too far from the ground.

When you’re ready to do the Ollie, you want to jump high into the air by slamming your back foot on the tail of the board.

You should hit the board with your foot as hard as you can, and when you go into the air, your board should follow.

Make sure that you stay in the center of your board to keep it balanced. Keep your knees bent so that you will absorb the landing better.
